Caring for your Jewelry

Every piece of jewelry is an investment and with the proper care, you can preserve its beauty for years to come. You should bring your jewelry in for a complimentary cleaning and gemstone check at least twice a year. During this inspection, our jeweler will check that all stones are tight and secure and that there is no damage that can affect the integrity and safety of your stones.

In the meantime, there are some simple steps you can take to keep your jewelry looking bright and shiny. Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on when getting ready and the first thing you take off at night.

  • Remove your rings when putting on lotion. When taking your rings on and off, try not to touch the top of the gemstones. Hold your ring by the metal sides instead, to keep your stones looking brilliant longer.

  • When cleaning your jewelry by hand, place a towel in the sink to protect your jewelry from scratches or going down the drain. Use a high quality jewelry cleaner and a soft toothbrush to get into the small hard to reach places behind and between stones. Do NOT use an ammonia based solution on anything porous such as opals and turquoise.

  • Pearls should be cleaned with a soft, lint-free cloth as soon as you take them off, since the slight acid in your perspiration, perfume and lotion will affect your pearls over time. Rub your pearls with the soft cloth, dipped in very diluted soap and water solution, making sure not to completely soak them. Lay your pearl strand flat on towel to air dry after washing, as wearing or hanging them while wet will stretch the silk. You should store your pearls in an open bag separate from your other jewelry.

  • To keep your silver jewelry looking bright and shiny, tarnish strips are an effective way to ensure your silver pieces always look like new. Simply put a small strip of the tarnish sheet in with your silver jewelry. There is no need to keep your silver jewelry with the tarnish strip separate from your other pieces, as it will not affect your jewelry made of other metals or gemstones.

Again, it is important to let a professional inspect your jewelry on a regular basis to keep it looking like new and lasting a lifetime. We encourage you to visit our store for a complimentary cleaning and jewelry check.
